The More Than Blended Learning Primer is a great way to explore the More Than approach and learn how to design the More Than way. It’s self-directed and it’s online, so there’s absolutely nothing getting in your way. The Primer addresses six goals:
- Introduction: Come to terms with the more than approach
- Analysis: Act more like a trusted consultant and less like an order taker
- Structure: Structure your blends to provide end-to-end solutions
- Methods: Select effective methods for every phase of your solution
- Media: Select the most flexible and efficient ways to deliver your chosen methods
- Bringing it all together: Design complete solutions the more than way
You can choose to tackle as many of these goals as you like. If you are unsure, there is a survey you can take at the beginning to determine where your priorities lie.
To help you achieve each of your goals we have assembled a range of resources and suggested practical activities that will help you apply what you have learned to the real world.
Resources: These include interactive scenarios, animated explainers, conversations in which learning professionals pose questions about aspects of blended learning, even a special episode of Sherlock Holmes …
There are also worked examples, interactive explorations, which allow you to explore the ideas underlying the More Than approach through a conversational dialogue, and short extracts from the book to provide you with a more complete understanding of each topic.
Activities: These are key. Whatever you learn here from the resources will quickly dissipate if you don’t make the effort to relate it and then apply it to your real job. We have made some suggestions for activities, but you may well think of others that will be more relevant to you.
Groups: Another important aspect of the Primer is the opportunity to interact with other blended learning enthusiasts through the forums. We suggest you take advantage of this opportunity, because the views and experiences of other learning participants will enrich your learning and help you to put it into context.
Is the Primer a blended solution?
We’re pre-empting you from asking the question! Well, it does use a variety of learning strategies, it does provide the opportunity to work in two social contexts (individual and group) and it does follow the More Than blended learning structure: Preparation, Input, Application and Follow-up. However, we regard the Primer as one step in a more significant blend for you and your organisation that could include workshops, practical assignments, coaching and involvement in a wider community of practice. However, none of these are essential. If the Primer’s all you need, that’s good too.
